Credit Card Skimmer Found at Vero Beach Sunoco Station Pump
VERO BEACH, Fla. – A credit card skimmer was found and subsequently removed from a gas pump at the Sunoco gas station located at 2465 27th Avenue in SW Vero Beach, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office reported.
The staff at the gas station were alerted of the suspicious activity after receiving several calls from customers who said that their cards were fraudulently used after they purchased gas from the station.
The staffers went outside and quickly identified the skimmer device attached to one of the pumps and immediately contacted the Sheriff's office.
When deputies arrived, they removed the skimming device and are now investigating who may have rigged the device to collect customers' credit card information.
The pump where the skimmer was attached didn't have the security tape secured to the exterior to prevent tampering, according to Indian River County Sergeant Milo Thornton.
The officials with the Sheriff's office warned that people should always inspect gas pumps and ATMs before inserting their debit or credit cards. Gas pumps that are properly protected should have tape or a security seal on the outside, which indicates that they have been inspected.
Sheriff Deryl Loar told WPTV that their detectives are working on several good leads on the Vero Beach Sunoco case. He said they'll track down whoever placed the skimmer device and they will be brought to justice.
Any customers who visited this Sunoco station should take a look at their credit card statement to rule out fraudulent activity.
